COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Nick Ciuffo, the South Carolina catcher rated as the number one player in the state and the number two catcher in the country by Baseball America, has signed with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Ciuffo was the Rays' first round pick at No. 22 and played baseball at Lexington High School, 2013's AAAA state champions.

As part of signing with the pro team, Ciuffo will receive a nearly $2 million signing bonus.

Ciuffo had initially committed to playing college baseball with the Gamecocks.

After the signing was announced, Ciuffo took to Twitter to say thanks to Gamecocks fans for their support.

"To all the gamecock fans. I will always be a gamecock," said Ciuffo. "I will always bleed garnet and black."
