Police: Shotgun-wielding suspect walks up to man and starts shooting

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Authorities said a man is in the hospital fighting for his life after being shot by a man carrying a shotgun early Friday morning.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said shots rang out near an apartment complex on North Marque Ann Drive near La Margie Avenue a little before 2 a.m.

Responding officers reported finding a 34-year-old man lying in the courtyard of the Centurion Arms Apartments suffering from gunshot wounds. His name has not been released. It is believed he may have been hit multiple times.

Investigators said he was taken to an area hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

Detectives said the information they've gathered so far indicates that Steaphon Harris, 28, walked up carrying a shotgun and started firing at the victim. Police said the victim tried to run, but was hit and fell. They added he may have been shot again while on the ground.

Investigators are still looking for Harris.  He is 5'9" and weighs about 135 lbs.  Police say he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Investigators said they have not established a motive for the shooting.
