Community steps up for family that lost everything in fire

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Members of a family who only had the pajamas left on their backs Wednesday now have clothes, shoes and bags full of other items thanks to generous donations from the community.

"I never thought that so many people would be responding but they are," said Sheron Gentris.

The hotel room where Sheron and her family is staying is packed with bags full of stuff.

She's staying at the Magnuson Hotel with her five daughters and their father after a fire ripped through their duplex on Holt Drive early Wednesday morning.

What a difference a day makes. They lost everything to that fire, but after their story was told, Sheron said cars lined up outside the hotel and kept coming.

"We had one man come in and gave money," Sheron said. "Me and my husband definitely need to call him because he gave 300 dollars. Another lady gave 20 dollars, her and her husband. A lady she gave five dollars then there was a kid that brought the kids toys."

Those wishing to donate can do so at any area Capital One Bank. An account is set up in the name of the Gentris Family.

The Magnuson Hotel is located at 9999 Gwenadelle Drive (Airline @ I-12). Donations can also be dropped off there. Below is a list of their sizes:
