HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) -

The Butler County Sheriff's Office has identified a 15-year-old boy who died while swimming in a Hamilton canal on Tuesday evening.

William Allen, 15, of Hamilton, was fishing with two friends when they decided to try to swim across the water.

It happened in the area near Greenwood Cemetery, located along Joe Nuxhall Boulevard.

Around 7:30 p.m., emergency crews received a report of two victims stuck in the water. Upon arrival, they found a 15-year-old girl hanging from a tree limb in the water who was rescued by a paramedic on scene.

Allen made it about halfway across before he started struggling. His friend went into the water to help him, but the current was too strong.

Allen's body was recovered just after midnight.

"This is tragic," said Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones.  "This is a very sad reminder that rivers and waterways really are not meant to be play areas."
