NEW ORLEANS, LA (WAFB) -

Victor Butler was injured Tuesday after a collision with running back Mark Ingram.

Wednesday the Saints received the tough news that the linebacker reportedly tore an ACL and would likely spend the season on injured reserve.

After practice Tuesday, head coach Sean Payton was asked about Butler's injury and replied, "I think he is going to be fine actually, so we are fortunate."

Before signing with the Saints during the offseason, Butler played four years with the Dallas Cowboys. Last year he had his best year with the Cowboys making 25 tackles.

The linebacker played two years for Rob Ryan in Dallas and was a projected starter in the Saints new 3-4 defense.

Junior Galette, Martez Wilson, Will Smith and rookies Rufus Johnson and Chase Thomas are among the players who will now battle for Butler's spot.
