XU takes part in summer program for homeless children

NORWOOD, OH (FOX19) -

Researchers say children account for the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. As a result, volunteers from Xavier University (XU) spent Tuesday supporting local children who fall under this category.

For the second consecutive year, XU participated in Cincinnati Public School's 'Project Connect'.

Founded in 1996, the program provides educational services and enrichment opportunities for homeless children in the area. Organizers say while shelters work to fulfill basic human needs like food, clothing and shelter, educational needs of children are often pushed aside.

XU students hosted more than 60 children on Tuesday as part of the project's summer enrichment program.

Project Connect helps a total of 3,000 children throughout the year. Learn more about its services here: http://www.cps-k12.org/academics/programs/project-connect
