PLAQUEMINE, LA (WAFB) - A man who was accused of killing a man during a Mardi Gras parade in Plaquemine has been found guilty.

Authorities say Akeem Gailes pulled up in the parade line, got out of his car and shot Dewayne Smith on February 19, 2012.

On Thursday, officials say Gailes escaped, ran down three flights of stairs and out of the back door of the courthouse.  He was caught about 20 minutes later, hiding under a house.  The judge initially declared a mistrial, but prosecutors appealed the decision and the mistrial was overturned.

The jury convicted Gailes of manslaughter and felon in possession of a firearm.

He faces up to 60 years in prison when sentenced.  The district attorney's office says they will seek the maximum sentence.
