BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - An early Friday morning house fire had traffic backed up on Jefferson Highway for a few hours.
The fire started around 6:45 a.m. at a home on Jefferson between Drusilla and Bluebonnet. The house was divided into apartments. Officials say six people were home at the time of the fire and that everyone inside made it out safely, thanks in part to the location of the house and an observant firefighter.
"Before we received a 911 call one of our fire captains was leaving the station, which is only about 200 yards down the road. As he pulled out he saw the smoke, turned right around went back in the station and notified the crew on duty they had a fire right down the street," said St. George Fire Department Assistant Chief Michael Armanini.
Units were on the scene in less than three minutes after the fire captain reported the fire.
Four engines, a ladder and a rescue unit responded to the fire.
The interior of the structure was severely damaged throughout by fire and heavy smoke. The fire was declared under control at 6:51 a.m. An investigator was called to the scene. The cause is undetermined and under investigation.
