BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A Senate bill that would change the criminal sentencing for marijuana possession in Louisiana moved favorably through a judiciary committee Tuesday and will now await action on the Senate floor.

HB 103 by Rep. Austin Badon, D-New Orleans, would remove the habitual offender label on those who have been repeatedly charged with marijuana possession in order to reduce long-term prison sentences.

According to Badon, the measure would save the state about $2 million per year.

It must now get a two-thirds vote in the Senate to be debated before the session comes to an end Thursday.
