Troopers arrest suspect in deadly hit and run involving moped

HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) - An arrest has been made in a hit and run crash that left a moped rider dead.

Louisiana State Police said Earl Swaggerty, 29, of Ponchatoula, was arrested Monday afternoon. He is charged with felony hit and run driving.

The victim was Chaz Brumfield, 33, of Robert. The crash happened on May 26 around 8:30 p.m.

According to troopers, Swaggerty was southbound on LA 445 in Robert in a Toyota truck when he happened upon Brumfield. Investigators said Brumfield was travelling slowly on a moped and did not have on his headlights or taillights.

They reported the pickup hit the scooter and the impact threw Brumfield into the roadway. Troopers said Swaggerty then drove off.

Brumfield was run over by an 18-wheeler and a car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Swaggerty was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail. Bond information was not provided.
