Sheriff's Office: Smoldering skunk starts brush blaze

SIERRA VISTA, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A man is under investigation and possibly facing charges in connection with a weekend brush fire that burned 25 acres and several cars in a salvage yard.  Cochise County Sheriff's investigators say it started with a skunk set on fire.

According to the department's Facebook page: "Initial information indicates a male subject potentially started the fire after catching a skunk in a bag of dog food, lighting it on fire, and having the animal run from the scene starting the grass on fire."

The department says five homes were evacuated when the fire started Saturday afternoon on Fordney Lane in the community of Fairbanks.  Several fire departments responded including the Whetstone Fire Department, Fry Fire Department, Huachuca City Fire Department, State Land, Douglas Hot Shots and 2 Slurry Planes from the Bureau of Land Management.  They were able to put the fire out in a few hours.

Ralph's Wrecking sustained damage to several vehicles, but no buildings burned.
