BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A week and a half after the Louisiana Senate first rejected a bill that would have prohibited employers from paying unequal wages for the same job based on gender, the Senate reworked the bill and it has now passed through the House floor.
The amended bill says the equal pay for women act only applies to state employees. The bill failed last week without the amendment. The original bill was written to include all business in Louisiana.
The amended bill passed through the House floor with a vote of 85-12 Monday. It says that state offices pay men and women equally for the same services rendered.
This bill would not apply to private companies.
The bill was authored by Senator Edwin Murray of New Orleans.
The bill will now return to Senate for approval.
