Home invasion suspect dead, no charges for homeowner

(WMC-TV) – A suspect shot in a weekend home invasion has died. 20-year-old Rashawn Calvin has died from his injuries. He was shot Saturday night during an apparent home invasion.

It happened just before 9 o'clock Saturday night on Jonesy Lane. Sheriff's officials tell Action News 5 that Calvin was shot by the homeowner whom he knew, during the apparent home invasion.

Calvin also apparently used to work for the man. According to the homeowner, Calvin once worked with him in a 'Moon Bounce" side business he once had.

The family held a second man until deputies arrived. He was held for questioning but not charged.

Neighbors say this is a normally quiet neighborhood, but they would have done the same thing if someone was intruding.

Action News Five's Lauren Squires stopped by the home this afternoon for comment but no one came to the door. According to officials, the homeowner will not face charges and that he acted within his rights.

Shelby County Sheriff's spokesperson, Chip Washington said, "I think he was in his right, you have to protect yourself and your family. If you're coming in chances are you have to be ready to pay."

Tennessee law allows you to protect yourself and your home. Some states require that an intruder must be making an attempt to unlawfully or forcibly enter an occupied residence, business, or vehicle.

The intruder must be acting unlawfully and the homeowner must reasonably believe the intruder intends to inflict serious bodily harm or death upon an occupant of the home.
