The Selma Police Department is in a state of shock after having to confirm that one of their own officers shot two people to death over the weekend before turning the gun on himself.

Selma PD says the officer, identified as Dwight Moorer, was off-duty when he shot and killed his ex-girlfriend, 28-year-old Keoshia L. Hill and her step-father, 59-year-old Bill Jackson.

Moorer and Hill had an on-and-off relationship

Investigators say Moorer shot Jackson to death in the 300 block of 10th Street. Less than a mile away authorities found the bodies of Moorer and Hill in a white vehicle at the suspect's home in the 2400 block Springdale Street.

Dwayne Thomas witnessed the first shooting on 10th Avenue.

"The man tried to tell Moorer 'It doesn't have to be this way' and put up his hands to try to defend himself, but Moorer opened fire.. bam.. bam.. bam and shot him," said Thomas.

Thomas was one of three witnesses to the 10th Avenue shooting.

At the Selma Police Department, Chief William Riley describes his force as 'stunned and speechless.' The department never saw it coming. Riley tells WSFA 12 News Moorer was a good officer and worked at training field officer, meaning he helped recent graduates from the police academy make the transition to the streets.

Moorer was a military veteran with two tours of service in Iraq under his belt.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is now the lead investigative unit in this case. Officials with ABI say the department is investigating at the request of the Selma Police Chief.

The facts of the case will be turned over to the District Attorney once the investigation is complete.

Investigators say the motive behind the shootings may never be fully known.
