Officials urge hurricane preparedness early

Posted: Updated:
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

While the weather is calm now, we know in South Louisiana that can change at any time. With hurricane season, comes a looming threat of storms that could deprive you of power or drive you from your home.  Emergency kits are critical and should contain essential supplies including:

Batteries

Flashlights

Bottled water

An emergency radio

Canned food

It is also important to include a copy of your medical records and needed prescriptions, especially if you have a chronic medical condition. Officials with the Department of Health and Hospitals suggest keeping this information on a thumb drive.

For patients with clinical needs, like dialysis, it is important to have your emergency plan in place. Know if you will evacuate, and where you will go. That way you can arrange for any treatments while you are away from home. Also, if you rely on power for medical needs, like keeping medicine refrigerated, have a plan for if the power goes out.

Most importantly, start planning now.
