LSU struggles to beat underdog Jackson State

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

LSU beat Jackson State 11-7 at The Box to advance in the Baton Rouge Regional.

Ryan Eades struggled on the mound for LSU pitching only 2 1/3 innings, giving up two runs, four hits, three walks and two hit batters.

Jackson State scored two in the top of the first inning and LSU answered with two in the bottom.

LSU added two more runs in the third inning and another four runs in the 4th to take an 8-2 lead.

Mason Katz highlighted LSU's fourth inning rally with a two-run home run to center field.

Jared Foster also hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to increase LSU's lead to 10-2.

Kurt McCune (4-1) got the win after pitching 4 2/3 innings with five strikeouts and only giving up four hits.

Kevin Berry struggled for LSU in the eighth inning giving up three runs, two hits, two walks and hit a batter.

Nate Fury replaced Berry and after hitting Bryce Taylor to force in a run, he struck Charles Tilery out on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning. Jackson State cut the lead to 10-5.

Mason Katz doubled in the bottom of the 9th inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Foster to increase LSU's lead to 11-5.

Hunter Newman started the ninth inning for LSU giving up a 2-run home run to Fred Hampton. Joey Bourgeois replaced Newman to close the door on Jackson State.

Sean McMullen had three hits for LSU and Katz added two hits and four RBI.

In the top of the fourth inning, shortstop Alex Bregman and left fielder Raph Rhymes collided on a fly ball to end the inning. Rhymes received three stitches above his lip and Bregman was taken to a local hospital where doctors have x-rayed his face and is still being evaluated.
