June 1 is the first day of hurricane season. Forecasters believe this will be another active season for the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. South Louisiana has had more than its fair share of hurricanes in recent years.
In addition to major hurricanes like Katrina and Rita, we've seen that even less powerful storms can produce major damage. Category 2 Gustav knocked out power for weeks in some places in 2008, while last year, Isaac - a category 1 - produced flooding that had never been seen before in many spots.
Let these recent experiences be a reminder that every storm is different and poses its own set of threats. They should all be taken seriously. The WAFB Storm Team will help get you prepared with its annual hurricane special - The Fifth Season - airing Monday at 6:30 p.m.
The team will take a look back at the flooding from Isaac, changes to the flood insurance program and much more. Hope you watch.
