TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

There is controversy over a memorial for a local woman who was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend.

The memorial is in the parking lot of the Southland Shopping Center on Byrne Road in south Toledo.

On Sunday, March 24th, Kaitlin Gerber was shot and killed in her car by Jashua Perz.

Perz called 9-1-1 before killing himself during an hours-long standoff with Maumee Police.

Gerber's loved ones have built a memorial to her, where they say she took her last breath.

The owner of the property, however, says the memorial will be taken down after this weekend.

Friends and family say the tribute is important, it not only has helped them cope, but it helps others who have dealt with domestic violence.

"A lot of them have told me her story has actually helped them, in that they think this is a beautiful reminder that life is too short and domestic violence needs to be taken seriously and I think this should stay," said Kaitlin's best friend, Sarah Sutphin.

The property owner, Brixmor Management, has not returned calls for comment.
