(WMC-TV) - A baby fights to survive at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in critical condition after being hit by an SUV with his mother behind the wheel, according to police.
An orange circle marks the point of impact, where Memphis police said a one-year-old boy was run over my his own mother.
It happened just before 11 p.m. Wednesday outside Brothers Market on East Alcy Road.
Police said the baby was one of three children not in a car seat inside a SUV.
At some point, a rear door opened, and the baby fell out.
Witnesses said the vehicle then backed over the baby's head during the commotion.
"The baby was crying, and they were wrapping the baby head up with white papers and stuff," said neighbor Deandre Perry.
Other neighbors said the mother would never intentionally hurt any of her children.
