Prescott students accused of hacking grades

PRESCOTT, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

Three Prescott High School students are accused of hacking into teachers' computers and improving their grades.

Police say three 16-year-old boys who are juniors at Prescott High face juvenile proceedings on charges of tampering with public records and computer tampering.

Police say a teacher became suspicious after noticing that a student's listed grade wasn't consistent with his efforts in class.

School officials contacted the Prescott Unified School District's information technology staff, and it was determined the student's grades had been raised.

According to police, the students illegally accessed several teachers' computers and changed their grades by using a device that records keystrokes.

"Some students made some poor choices around technology," said Dave Smucker, the superintendent of the Prescott Unified School District. "(It's) something you could buy at Best Buy. I don't see it as something real sophisticated."

Parents were disappointed.

"Life's hard, but you've got to go through the steps," said Summer Hinton. "I think whatever punishment they get, they deserve it."

"We certainly implemented our policies and procedures as far as consequences, if you will," Smucker said. "We're doing our best as a school district to stay on top of what students know about technology and how they use it."
