THIBODAUX, LA (WAFB) - Authorities said a 24-year-old man faces murder charges after his girlfriend's 20-month-old son died of what is believed to be Shaken Baby Syndrome.
The Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office said Emmanuel Hernandez, a Mexican National who had been living in Cut Off, was booked on a charge of second-degree murder late Tuesday night.
Deputies said little Enmanuel Gonzales was taken to the hospital on May 15 because he was having trouble breathing. He was later transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit at Children's Hospital of New Orleans.
LPSO said it was contacted on May 17 by hospital officials because the baby had stopped breathing. The hospital representatives also reported the injuries were consistent with those associated with Shaken Baby Syndrome. According to investigators, Gonzales died after being taken off life support over the weekend.
Deputies said Hernandez was initially detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) because agents determined he did not have legal residency in the US. They added he had been living with his girlfriend and her son.
He was later transferred to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center after detectives obtained an arrest warrant in the baby's death.
Hernandez's bond was set at $1 million.
The investigation is ongoing.
