MONROE, MI (Toledo News Now) -

Four years ago, 5-year-old Navaeh Buchanan went missing, and was eventually found murdered. Family and friends gathered Wednesday night to keep her memory alive and remind the community her killer was never arrested.

Her family remembers it like it was yesterday. Nevaeh was playing outside her apartment on May 24, 2009, when she disappeared.

"I just happen to stop my car, and I said, ‘Nevaeh, Nevaeh.' She goes, ‘What?'" said Diana Lawson, describing the last time she saw her great-niece. "I said, ‘I just wanted to tell you I love you.'"

Just a few hours later, Nevaeh was kidnapped.

"It's an empty spot in my heart," said her grandmother, Sherry Buchanan. "I don't have her there with me."

Ten days after her disappearance, Nevaeh's body was found by a fisherman, encased in cement along the River Raisin. Four years later, no one has been arrested.

"I hope and pray every single day that there will be justice for her," Lawson said. "Not only bringing closure to her, but closure to us family. You know, our hearts are breaking."

Focus on the Children raises funds for a Nevaeh scholarship. They help local families who need assistance in affording pre-school. They also make sure the community hasn't forgotten that justice has yet to be served.

"I don't think she'll ever be out of everybody's hearts," Buchanan said. "A lot of people say that she's their angel."
