NEW ALBANY, IN - The mother who was discovered dead with her two young children in a New Albany creek killed them before she drowned, according to New Albany police.'

Police say Jaime Clutter died from hypothermia and drowning, but they are not exactly sure if she committed suicide or if her death was accidental.

No matter the case, it's a heartbreaking situation that has impacted a community.

"As a mother and a grandmother, I felt I had to get some closure over the tragedy in our community," said Cynthia Schultz who lives in New Albany.

Schultz may not have known Jaime Clutter and her two children, Brandon,10, and Katelyn, 6 months, but what happened back on March 13th affected her.

"When people hurt, we all should hurt and we should just look for signs and reach out to other people, said Schultz. "It doesn't have to be a situation like this, but just care about your neighbor."

On Friday, Schultz hung rosaries and said prayers for the entire Clutter family while overlooking Falling Run Creek.

Police say the children were not properly dressed for the low 30 temperatures when their mother brought them to Binford Park. They say Clutter drowned her children and then she died from drowning.

Investigators have concluded Clutter suffered from mental illness, including postpartum depression and psychosis.

"The husband has denied her signs of mental illness after we spoke with several other family members and acquaintances they disclosed things that would be consistent with mental illness," said Chief Sherri Knight, New Albany Police.

Police say Clutter believed her family was being stalked by demons.

Looking back neighbor Larry Wheeler says he does remember some strange behavior. "The oddest thing was watching her go in and out of her door, just kept going in and out, in and out, like she was looking for someone," said Wheeler.

AT the time of the deaths, detectives found a baby harness with a Bible in it, hanging on a tree limb nearby.

"Prayers to the family and I hope everything will be ok," said Wheeler. "I know they are in a better place, but it's sad they went early."

Investigators say toxicology results reveal there were no signs of drugs or alcohol in Clutter's system.

Her husband, Mike Clutter, was at work when the drownings happened.

He could not be reached for comment.
