LSU tied a school record with 22 SEC wins in a season, hitting four solo home runs to beat Ole Miss 7-1 in the first game of their final regular season series at Alex Box Stadium Thursday night.
Seniors Mason Katz and Raph Rhymes both went 3-for-4 and connected for round-trippers to start their senior weekend in style.
With LSU leading 2-0 in the fourth, Katz ended a home run drought dating back to March 31 with a solo shot, his 14th of the season.
Christian Ibarra also homered later in the frame to make it 4-0. Rhymes' exciting inside-the-park homer came in the sixth inning, when he flipped over Ole Miss catcher Stuart Turner in front of home plate to make it 5-0.
Sean McMullen added the final solo shot in the seventh, after Stuart had put the Rebels on the board with an RBI single off Cody Glenn. The sophomore went seven innings, scattering eight hits and allowing just one run to earn the pitching victory.
"We beat a very good pitcher tonight," LSU coach Paul Mainieri said. "Mayers has had a lot of success against us over the years, and we really respect his ability. I liked our approach at the plate – we got off to a great start in the first inning and swung the bats well throughout the game."
Cody Glen picked up the win for the Tigers improving his record to 6-2.
"I thought Cody Glenn was the real key to the game," said Mainieri. "He just seems to get better with every outing, and I really admire the way he works his way out of jams. He keeps his composure and makes big pitches at the right time to keep the opponent off the scoreboard."
LSU 47-7 (22-6) has won 22 conference games twice before, in 1986 and 1997. The Tigers now have 41 homers on the season, compared to just 19 for Mike Bianco's Rebels (35-19, 14-14).
