Montgomery to offer traffic fine amnesty program in June

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

If you have outstanding traffic violations - you may want to pay close attention. The City of Montgomery will be offering an amnesty program for two days in June to help you take care of your fines.

The amnesty program will remove certain fees, eliminate warrants for arrest and allow the option of payment plans for individuals who meet the amnesty criteria and show up for the program on the specified dates.

The program will be available to individuals with traffic fines totaling less than $2,500. Those eligible must either make a minimum payment of $150, or pay 10% of the outstanding balance on their fine - whichever is greater.

Each individual can choose to be placed on a payment plan, but must be prepared to present their valid driver's license or other proof of residence (ie: utility bill, etc.). Those who opt to plead not guilty to any unadjudicated cases will be required to post a $100 cash bond before a trial date will be scheduled.

Your last name will dictate the date on which you can apply for amnesty consideration.

Individuals with a last name beginning with A-M can go to the Montgomery Municipal Courthouse on Saturday, June 1, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Individuals with a last name beginning with N-Z are scheduled for the same time on Saturday, June 8. 

The City of Montgomery held a similar amnesty program in September 2009. A total of 2,044 individuals presented themselves for amnesty consideration and 1,365 (67%) completed the terms set forth. The City collected approximately $800,000 from those amnesty participants.
