MORGAN CITY, LA (WAFB) -

An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of hurting his baby son to the point of causing brain damage.

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office said Gregory Parker of Morgan City was taken into custody Monday afternoon on a charge of second-degree cruelty to juveniles.

Officials said the infant suffered neurological damage and is listed in critical but stable condition.

Deputies reported receiving a report from a doctor at Children's Hospital of New Orleans about a 3-month-old with injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Detectives said they interviewed family members and determined the baby was in his father's care when he suffered the injuries. They added Parker was then questioned and arrested.

He was booked into the parish jail and no bond was set.

The case remains under investigation.
