NSU Tennis falls to Bama in NCAA tournament

Although the final outcome was a 4-0 decision in Alabama's favor, the Northwestern State women's tennis team did not make it as easy as the score indicates for the ninth ranked Crimson Tide.

The Lady Demons finish the season at 14-8 while Alabama improves to 20-5. The Crimson Tide will take on Memphis, who defeated Florida State 4-1 earlier on Friday, in second round action on Saturday.

"I thought we came out and played solid doubles today," said Lady Demon head coach Patric DuBois. "All three teams actually came out and competed well but Alabama is just stronger than us."

In doubles play, Polina Konop and Natalya Krutova fell 8-2 in the second position while the No. 3 team of Amy Williams and Daniela Simonova claimed four games before falling 8-4 to Natalia Maynetto and Emily Zabor.

The No. 1 duo of Tatiana Larina and Andrea Nedorostova trailed by just one at the 5-4 mark but were unable to finish as Alabama had already clinched the doubles point.

Konop came out on fire in the first set of singles competition, taking a set off of the No. 34 ranked player in the country, Mary Anna Macfarlane 7-6 (7-3). The junior notched an early 2-0 lead in the second set before Alabama clinched the match with wins at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 positions.

"Great match at No. 1 today," said DuBois. "Polina was up 7-6 and was about to go up 3-0 in the second against a girl that ranks pretty high in the country. In the other matches we played the best we could and competed well but Alabama is very good.

"Unfortunately we will lose Andrea after this season but every other player will still be here next year," said DuBois. "We have had a good recruiting year and I definitely expect our team to be in the running for the Southland Conference Championship. We hope to stay healthy and be able to return to the NCAA's again next year."
