NSU softball advances in tourney, 1-0, over Sam Houston
Cassandra Barefield's RBI single in the bottom of the first was all the Northwestern State softball team needed to defeat Sam Houston State1-0 Friday morning in the second round of the Southland Conference tournament at the Lady Demon softball complex.
With two outs, Brianna Rodriguez picked up her 19th double of the season in the bottom of the first, and was driven in by Barefield to record the only run of the game.
The Bearkats had multiple chances throughout the contest to combat the one-run deficit as they left seven runners on base through the seventh inning.
Senior Kylie Roos (15-3) picked up the win as she threw a complete game, striking out three and allowing five hits.
SHSU's Meme Quinn (11-8) suffered the loss, striking out seven and allowing just four hits.
Barefield led from the plate posting a one-for-two performance with one RBI, followed by Rodriguez and Tara McKenney going one-for-three.
The Lady Demons move on in the winner's bracket of the SLC tournament as they face Central Arkansas at approximately four o'clock Friday afternoon at the Lady Demon softball complex. UCA defeated No. 1 seeded McNeese State 1-0 in nine innings on Thursday to advance in the bracket.
