A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
A community is grieving over the loss of two area teenagers, Blaine Romes, 14, and Blake Romes, 17, who were found dead Thursday after disappearing from their Ottawa home. A third teenager, Michael Fay, made an appearance in a Putnam County courtroom Friday afternoon.
We're told he's facing a charge of grand theft auto, and is being transported to the Wood County Juvenile Detention Center, where he could be indefinitely. Sources tell WTOL 11 that more charges are on the way, but what those charges could be were not specified. It is believed that Fay poses a danger to the community and, sources say, he could flee.
In court today, Fay asked for a court-appointed council, he entered a not guilty plea or denial of the charges.
All this connects back to an Amber Alert sent Thursday out of Putnam County, and later canceled when a car associated with the alert was found in Columbus. One person was found inside, and Fay was later taken into custody.
Thursday evening, two bodies were recovered in a ditch near where the Romes boys originally went missing.
On Friday, the Lucas County Coroner's Office told WTOL 11 that it now has two cases from Putnam County. Reps say autopsies will be conducted Friday on the two victims. Until they are completed, no cause of death will be known for either boy.
The Franklin County Juvenile Court Administrator's Office says Michael Fay appeared before a magistrate Friday morning. He waived his hearing and the magistrate ordered him to return with Putnam County Sheriff's deputies to Putnam County. He was not charged with anything in Franklin County. Even though a document was prepared charging him with auto theft, the charge was never made because he waived the hearing.
According to Ottawa Police Lt. Josh Strick, the FBI is now involved in the investigation. Strick also said Fay is the only suspect in this case.
Family members say they are shocked and incredibly sad about what has happened. They say Blake and Blaine were truly incredible kids and will be missed dearly. Mandy Benton Bosiljevac, a cousin to the boys, says a memorial fund has been established to help with funeral and burial expenses for Blake and Blaine Romes.
Donations can be made at any Huntington Bank location for the "Romes Memorial Fund." Donations can be sent to Romes Memorial Fund, PO Box 13, Leipsic, Ohio 45856 - and checks can of course be made to "Romes Memorial Fund."
Toledo News Now will cover this case as it develops and bring you the latest details online and on air.
