Crash near townhouse complex leaves 85-year-old woman dead

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Police said an elderly woman died when she hit another car while turning into a townhouse complex Wednesday morning.

The victim was identified as Jeane Peters, 85, of St. Francisville. The crash happened on Old Hammond Highway at St. Regis Drive, which is near Airline Highway, a little before 8:30 a.m.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, Peters was trying to turn into the Runnymede Townhome Community.

Investigators reported while making a left turn into the parking lot from Old Hammond Highway, her 1997 Chevrolet Lumina nearly collided with a car headed in the opposite direction. Police said the other driver was able to swerve and avoid an accident, but Peters then hit a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu that was behind the first car.

Peters was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the other car was identified as Tenise Stewart, 21, of Baton Rouge. She was taken to Baton Rouge General Medical Center Mid-City with minor to moderate injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
