What a difference a year makes. this week named Louisiana the second best state for retirees. The report cites a great mix of low taxes and balmy weather as reasons people may want to retire here. It mentions the state's 30-year average temperature at about 67 degrees, is higher than all other states except Hawaii and Florida.

Last year, Louisiana was ranked among one of the worst places to retire, with Bankrate citing our crime rate. But, while the study took new factors into account this year, it still says our crime rate, among the highest in the nation, is the big knock on the Bayou State.

Imagine the possibilities if we could reduce crime. We all know that in addition to the positive factors mentioned, south Louisiana is just a great place to live with a culture all its' own. Sometimes, it's easy to take that for granted. Studies like this remind us that we already have what many people are looking for.
