Police jury ponders closing strip clubs

GREENSBURG, LA (WAFB) - The St. Helena Parish Police Jury called a special meeting Wednesday night to discuss an ordinance that would shut down the parish's two strip clubs.

Currently, "The Mansion" and "The Oak Ridge Lounge" are the parish's only two strip clubs.

However, Police Jury President Major Coleman has some concerns about shutting down existing businesses.

"We all know we're in a money crunch right now," said Coleman. "I don't think it's right for us to spend any more money and I'm sure if we adopt this, this is where we're going."

Coleman is referring to a draft ordinance that basically would shut down the two existing strip clubs. The police jurors expressed concern about getting sued if they passed the ordinance.

Two committees have been formed to add some language and delete some from the draft copy.

"I think they said it very clearly that we are grand-fathered in," said Tyrone Butler, owner of The Mansion.

The full police jury will meet again in two weeks to deal with the ordinance.
