NSU sweeps Southern with two rally innings

From NSU Athletics

BATON ROUGE – Two big, rally innings led the Northwestern State baseball team in a 12-11 win over Southern University to complete the two-game sweep on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

NSU (13-33) was down 4-0 when a five-run fourth inning gave it the lead, and then the Demons worked out of an 8-6 hole with six runs in the eighth inning. Southern dropped to 19-20 on the season.

The fourth inning started with a single to left field by Todd Wallace followed by a double to right center from Cort Brinson. After Nathan Lyons walked to load the bases, Zack Costa was awarded a free base to score Wallace.

Garrett Killgore, who accounted for three runs batted in on Tuesday, knocked in Lyons and Brinson on a single to left field. Edwin Gomez singled to left field to score Costa, and Nick Purdy grounded out to the right side to score Killgore from third.

The eighth inning rally started with a walk to Nick Purdy and a single up the middle by Wallace. Brinson put down a sacrifice bunt before Lyons singled up the middle to score both runners.

One batter later, Jake Clouatre walked and was followed by a towering fly drive to the left field wall to score two from Matt Burns. After Burns scored from third base on a wild pitch, Edwin Gomez singled and later scored when Will Watson singled through the right side.

The Demons went through six pitchers that started with Logan Shaftner who worked one-plus innings and gave up four runs on five hits.

Joey Parrack (1-7) got the win and pitched two innings with one hit and three strikeouts.  Cameron Brewer (5) earned his second straight save on 1.2 innings pitched with no hits allowed; it was second consecutive game he worked more than one inning to take the save.

Daniel Garcia (4-4) took the loss as the pitcher on the mound for the Demons six-run eighth inning.  He only worked one-third of an inning and allowed four runs on two hits and two walks.

Southern jumped out to a three-run lead on four straight hits to lead off the inning. They added another in the fourth inning when Gavin Webster homered over the center field wall.

After the rally fourth from Northwestern State, the Jaguars added four runs in the fifth inning that started off with two straight doubles from Harley Wiltz and Tyler Kirksey. With two runners on the bag, Derrick Hopkins hit a two-run double down the the right field line.

NSU added a run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly from Gomez to score Burns who doubled off the right field wall.

SU's final runs came on a three-run shot to right field from Sean Wiltz.

Gomez, Lyons, Killgore, and Burns all had two RBI for the Demons. Burns was two-of-three with two runs scored.

Watson and Wallace each had three hits. Watson had one RBI and Wallace had two runs scored.
