BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A dramatic rescue of three construction workers unfolded at a Baton Rouge hospital Wednesday morning that left even those on the ground quite nervous.
It happened at Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center. An expansion project is currently underway at the hospital.
Witnesses described seeing the men dangling on their life ropes after one side of their scaffolding snapped. Crews raised one of the workers up to the roof, while the other two jumped inside windows and made their way down through the building.
"I was on the fifth floor, about to get into my truck and I heard this huge crash," said Jeff Morris. "And, I thought, 'My goodness, what are they throwing out of the window over there on the construction site?' So, I went over to the edge and there was the scaffold waving in the wind and there was two guys that were hanging by safety ropes, just hanging there on the side of the building and there was another guy who was still holding on to the scaffolding."
No injuries were reported. The workers were reportedly smiling and waving to people after the incident. According to Morris, that was not the case while the men were still stuck swinging in the air. Despite the seriousness of the situation, he was able to joke about it a little in describing them.
"They didn't look like window washers. They didn't look happy being there. So, I'm sure it was more alarming to them than it was to me hearing the crash," he added.
A hospital spokesperson said she was still working to gather information, but initial reports indicated a piece of scaffolding the men were working on fell. The men had on safety ropes and were pulled to safety, she said.
Initial reports to East Baton Rouge EMS stated the men were dangling about 100 feet in the air.
