Tigers to host Cowboys in mid-week match-up

BATON ROUGE, La. – Third-ranked LSU (39-6) plays host to McNeese State (20-21) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Alex Box Stadium.

The game can be heard on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network (98.1 FM in Baton Rouge )and live video, audio and stats of the game may be accessed in the Geaux Zone at www.LSUsports.net.

LSU looks to rebound after dropping two of three games to South Carolina last weekend. The series loss was LSU's first of the regular season since Vanderbilt won two of three games over the Tigers in May 2012.

"We're looking forward to facing a very solid McNeese club as we are now in the home stretch of the regular season," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "Every game takes on great significance, especially at this time of the year. Our club is facing some adversity for the first time this season, but we've got great kids who give everything they have, and I'm confident we'll play well this week."

LSU enters Tuesday's game with a 25-game win streak against Louisiana schools and a 32-game win streak in mid-week contests.

Mainieri said sophomore left-hander Cody Glenn (5-1, 3.13 ERA) will start on the mound for the Tigers, while McNeese State coach Terry Burrows will counter with senior left-hander Trey McGee (2-4, 3.89 ERA).

Freshman shortstop Alex Bregman continues to lead the Tigers at the plate, batting .398 (76-for-191) this season with 11 doubles, seven triples, five homers, 42 RBI and 46 runs. Bregman leads the SEC in hits and triples, and he is No. 2 in the league in runs and total bases (116).

LSU second baseman Jacoby Jones hit .500 (5-for-10) in the South Carolina series with one double and one run scored, while rightfielder Jared Foster hit .455 (5-for-11) against the Gamecocks, and he recorded a .500 on-base percentage.

Designated hitter/outfielder Sean McMullen batted .417 (5-for-11) in the South Carolina series with two doubles, three RBI and one run scored, and senior leftfielder Raph Rhymes hit .438 (7-for-16) in the Tigers' four games last week – including a win over Tulane - with two doubles, two RBI and four runs.

McNeese is led at the plate by senior catcher/first baseman Michael Sullivan, who is hitting .333 with five doubles, two homers and 21 RBI. Junior outfielder Jackson Gooch is batting .305 with 14 doubles, one triple, three homers and 28 RBI.

LSU leads the overall series with McNeese State, 26-9, including two wins over the Cowboys last season, one in Baton Rouge (11-4 on Feb. 22) and one in Lake Charles (19-10 on Feb. 29). The Tigers have won eight straight games over the Cowboys; McNeese State's last win over LSU came in 2000, a 4-3 decision in Lake Charles.
