Flying Pig Marathon extends online registration

Cincinnati's Flying Pig Marathon is quickly approaching, and it looks like the bombings at the Boston Marathon might have created an unintended surge in interest.

On May 5, thousands of runners will lace up for the 15th running of the marathon.  This year, it's not just about finishing a 26.2 mile race.

"It's extremely gratifying to see that people are determined to go on with life as usual, and also really, I guess, for us, it's very gratifying to see that the Pig means something to them.  It's part of the community.  It helps to make a statement," said Iris Simpson-Bush, the marathon's executive director.

Since the bombings at the Boston Marathon, interest has seemingly peaked for the Flying Pig.  Online registration had already been closed, but thanks to heightened demand, it was re-opened.

This year will be the biggest race they've ever had, with more than 33,000 runners expected, and that was all before this extra interest came about.

"There were so many people emailing, calling that they wanted to run one of the events.  So, that kind of precipitated our decision to reopen registration," added Simpson-Bush.

One woman we talked to ran the Boston Marathon and finished well before the explosions. She's been in about a dozen marathons, and this year's Flying Pig will have a different meaning for her, as well.

"It's just more about getting out there and showing that we are strong, we are one big community, and that we're not going to let things like that get us down and that we can all come together for a bigger cause," said Megan Folkerth, who ran the Boston Marathon.

Workers at Bob Roncker's Running Spot say they've also noticed a spike in interest from both runners and those wanting to make a donation or buy a t-shirt.  The same can be said for race organizers who are doing what they can to being people and cities together through this year's event.

"People were clamoring for something the Pig was doing to establish a tribute for Boston.  We have a t-shirt.  That t-shirt says 'Cincinnati Stands Boston Strong,' and again, 'From Porkopolis to Beantown," Simpson-Bush told FOX19.

New race registration deadlines via the Flying Pig Marathon website:
