Collections and tobacco tax discussed at session

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The legislative session is now in week three at the Louisiana Capitol, with the proposed tobacco tax and state collections being two of the big topics up for discussion Tuesday.

State Rep. Chris Broadwater, R-Hammond, introduced a bill in the House Ways and Means Committee to create a Department of Debt Recovery that would be supported by a joint venture between the Department of Revenue and the Office of the Louisiana Attorney General.

According to Treasurer John Kennedy, the centralized collection unit would work to begin taking in the more than $1.3 billion currently owed to the state by business and residents.

Another bill that would increase the tax on a pack of cigarettes by 33 cents is being discussed as well.
