A Republican state senator from Tucson is joining the growing list of politicians who are considering a run for the Arizona governor's office next year,

Sen. Al Melvin said Monday he's formed an exploratory committee for a run using public financing. Melvin says he wants to provide $9,000 to each school student in the state to allow parents to choose their school.

The 68-year-old has been in the Senate since 2009 and is a retired Naval Reserve captain and Merchant Marine officer.

Other Republicans considering running to replace Gov. Jan Brewer include Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman, Secretary of State Ken Bennett, state Treasurer Doug Ducey and Mesa Mayor Scott Smith.
