Report: Suspected huffer was trying to catch 'devil worshippers'

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) -

Police say a man caught huffing paint over the weekend told them he was using the paint to catch devil worshippers who were trying to sexually assault him.

A Charleston police report states officers were patrolling the marsh area near the West Ashley-side of the Ashley River Bridge around 1:44 a.m. Sunday when they heard "loud, inaudible sounds coming from a group of trees near the river. When they went to investigate, they found 32-year-old Carl Mcguirt IV sanding in front of the marsh, holding a four-inch knife, spinning around in circles and talking to himself.

Officers said they immediately detected a strong smell of spray paint, and noted that Mcguirt had gold paint on his mouth, face, hands, clothes, arms and feet. They also said Mcguirt's face was "flushed" and said he appeared disoriented.

About five feet away, police said they found three cans of gold spray paint with holes in the middle of them, and "the contents were all over the ground and immediate area."

As officers were escorting Mcguirt out of the woods, police said he began to yell that he was not huffing, but "using the paint for evidentiary value." The report states Mcguirt told officers he "sprays the gold paint on a rag and places the rag on his mouth."

McGuirt reportedly told police, "When the devil worshipers come after him and try to orally sexually assault him, the paint gets on their genitals and he can use that information to prosecute them."

Mcguirt then accused one of the police officers of sexually assaulting him and robbing him and told officers he was a captain in the Marine Corps and did not have to go to jail, according to the report.

After being cleared from a psychiatric exam at Medical University of South Carolina, Mcguirt was taken to the Charleston County Detention Center.

He is charged with illegal use of aromatic hydrocarbons.
