Officials have released the identity of the man killed in a weekend riot at the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility in Woodville.

Demond Flowers, 21, of Hinds County was serving 18 years in prison for charges of vehicle burglary, strong armed robbery and robbery. His sentence began June 10, 2011.

WLBT and Fox 40 talked to Flowers' mother Janice Flowers at her Jackson home. She said the state crime lab told her Demond Flowers died from a stab wound to the heart. She also was told the incident was under investigation.

A spokesman for the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation says the uprising was brought under control quickly.

Few details about the riot, such as when it started or the reason for the uprising, have been released. The prison was placed on lockdown. Nine other prisoners were injured.

Corrections Corporation of America owns and operates the prison, according to its website.

CCA also owns and operates the Adams County Correctional Facility, near Natchez, where a riot occurred in May of last year. A detention officer/prison guard, Catlin Carithers, 24, was killed in that uprising.
