LSUPD receives national certification for security at sporting events

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The LSU Police Department was awarded a national certification Thursday related to safety and security for athletic events at the university.

Officials announced LSUPD, in conjunction with the athletic department, earned the Sport Event Security Award (SESA). The certification is given by the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4).

"Even with all the winning and sometimes the agony of defeat, during any sporting event - as administrators it's always in the back of our minds - what could happen," said LSU Chancellor Dr. William Jenkins.

LSU is the tenth university in the nation to receive this certification and the fourth in the Southeastern Conference. Tiger Stadium is the ninth largest in country.

The certification covers many different security plans - everything from an active shooter to a full scale evacuation of the entire campus, even during a football game. LSU went through a year-and-a-half process.

"Congratulations to LSU on achieving this - this is no small task," said Lou Marciani, the director of NCS4. "We are proud of them for their positive attitude toward safety, which will directly lead to the security of everybody."

LSU will start exercising its various plans more. The university's police department was ahead of the game, but needed to work on a better evacuation plan and improve it.

That's what officers will be doing from now on.
