MANDEVILLE, LA (WWL) - WWL reports a post office employee found a suspicious package in a trash can, leading to the evacuation of the building and closure of a highway Wednesday morning.
It happened at a post office in Mandeville off US 190. Authorities closed the highway in both directions.
According to WWL, the briefcase was moved a safe distance away from the building around 9:30 a.m. after x-rays were inconclusive. Police later destroyed the package.
Police said the briefcase was filled with trash and junk, but officials cited the employee's response on heightened awareness after the Boston bombings.
The station reported the Mandeville Police Department said the post office was evacuated when a janitor discovered a new briefcase stuffed in a garbage can around 6:30 a.m. Two nearby businesses were also evacuated and others in the area were told to stay put.
Police added the bomb squad from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office responded to the scene.
