LIVINGSTON, LA (WAFB) - The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office is partnering with the Louisiana Workforce Commission to start a work release program for the parish's inmates.
Sheriff Jason Ard said he agreed to the program because it will help inmates transition from prison back into society.
Inmates convicted of non-violent crimes and have less than three years left on their sentences will be placed in open positions in Livingston Parish.
Ard said work release inmates will be housed in the Livingston Parish Detention Center for now, but there are talks of building a work release facility next door.
The Louisiana Department of Corrections has already started screening inmates for the program.
