BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Firefighters are investigating what caused a fire that destroyed most of the merchandise in a store Thursday morning.
It sparked at a business in the 3000 block of Plank Road in Baton Rouge around 6:15 a.m.
The Baton Rouge Fire Department said crews saw heavy smoke billowing from the store when they arrived on the scene. Firemen reported finding flames behind the checkout counter.
Reports indicate firefighters kept the fire contained to that area, but the rest of the store had heavy heat and smoke damage. The fire was under control in less than 30 minutes of their arrival.
The fire department reported about $250,000 worth of the store's inventory was destroyed by the heat.
Officials added the quick action by the firefighters helped spare the business next door from any damage related to the fire.
