No. 1 LSU (31-2) pushed across five runs in the first inning to spark their 11-2 victory over Southern (12-13) Tuesday night in the Wally Pontiff Jr Classic. The Tigers improve to 8-2 in the Classic.
The Tigers got the scoring started on a bases-loaded RBI single by Mason Katz, who extends his hitting streak to 13 games. Katz finished the game 2-3, 2 RBI.
LSU extended its lead to 4-0 when Andrew Stevenson beat out a ground ball to second base. Both Raph Rhymes and Katz scored on the play.
The fifth run came off the bat of freshman catcher Michael Barash, who made his first start as catcher for the Tigers. Barash went 2-3 on the night.
Paul Mainieri got to use Kurt McCune for three innings in his first start exactly as he wanted. McCune allowed three hits, two earned runs, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. McCune gave up single runs in both the second and third inning.
Brent Bonvillain came in after McCune and was even better on the mound. Bonvillain went three strong giving up only one hit while striking out seven Jaguars.
Alex Bregman extended his hitting streak to 21 games. Bregman smacked triple in the fourth inning that would clear the bases and give LSU the 8-2 advantage.
The Tigers and Jaguars will go back at it again Wednesday night from Alex Box Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:30 pm. Freshman Hunter Devall will take the mound for the Tigers.
