BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Gov. Bobby Jindal is scrapping his tax swap proposal this session after running into strong opposition across the political spectrum for the sales tax hikes included in the package.
But the Republican governor isn't giving up on the removal of Louisiana's income taxes on individuals and businesses.
Instead, in his speech Monday as the legislative session opened, Jindal asked lawmakers to come up with a plan for getting rid of the state income tax. He didn't offer parameters for what should be included.
Several lawmakers have offered proposals to phase-out the income tax over a decade.
Jindal had proposed to get rid of the income tax immediately and replace it with a sales tax hike, sales taxes charged on new services and higher tobacco taxes. That encountered widespread opposition.
