BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The members of Louisiana State Police are known for taking down criminals and now, they are being recognized for "looking good" while doing it.

LSP received the North American Association of Uniform Manufacturers and Distributors "Best Dressed Award" for the state agency category during a reception in Orlando. This is the second time the department has received the recognition.

"As an agency, it is always nice to receive positive recognition and we are thankful to NAUMD for this award," said Col. Mike Edmonson, superintendent of Louisiana State Police. "The Louisiana State Police has always taken great pride in the uniform that we wear as it represents our commitment to the citizens of Louisiana to whom we serve. The Louisiana Trooper uniform continues to be one of the most recognizable in the country with its color scheme and our state clearly represented through the shape of the badge and patches."

Troopers have worn several uniform variations over its 76-year history. The current uniform was adopted in 1973.

"There is nothing more comforting to a community than an easily identifiable, uniformed police officer, particularly in a time of crisis," said Richard J. Lerman, president and CEO of the NAUMD. "In law enforcement, a visible, uniformed public safety presence on the street, at a mall or other institution can add a sense of security and help comfort the public or allay fears."

The award was developed to recognize the critical role uniforms play in law enforcement and public safety. Also, the award honors the wearer and clothing supplier.

NAUMD listed the following factors were considered in determining the winner:

Does the uniform fit the job function?

Is the appearance neat and do the garments fit properly?

What role do fabrics play in the overall look?

Most importantly, can the public immediately identify the wearer as a professional, law enforcement officer?
