H&R Block Tax Survey: Top Concerns if Tax Refund is Delayed

Nearly half of American taxpayers are somewhat or very dependent on receiving a tax refund from the IRS. The survey of 3,000 Americans and commissioned by H&R Block also found that if a tax refund was delayed, the biggest concern for one in four respondents would be not having enough money to meet required financial commitments like rent and bills. The IRS is required to hold refunds for returns claiming the earned income tax credit (EITC) and additional child tax credit (ACTC) u...

(RNN) - A person's most prized piece of technology is usually their cell phone.

On Wednesday, people across the world celebrated the development of their mobile device on its 40th birthday.

On April 3, 1973, engineer Martin Cooper placed a phone call in New York City on his Motorola prototype, the DynaTAC.

In a phone call to his development rival at AT&T, Joel Engel, he reportedly said, "I'm ringing you just to see if my call sounds good at your end."

"We knew even in 1973 that one day everyone would have a cell phone," Cooper told CNN's Erin McPike.

According to Mashable, the initial prototype was nine inches tall, weighed 2.5 pounds and had a talk time of 35 minutes, with 10 hours needed to charge. The price of the first phone sold, the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x, was sold for $3,995 in 1983.

Today, the iPhone 5, which weighs 3.95 ounces and costs between $199 and $399, and most are considered smartphones, and do more than make calls. Users receive email, surf the internet, send text messages and play games.

The first cell phones were meant for corporate business players and cars. In 2013, according to CNN, there are 6 billion cell phone users around the world.

"Twenty years from now it's going to be much simpler than today's phone," Cooper said. "You're going to have a phone maybe in your earring, behind your ear, or maybe embedded in your skin. So you're going to be able to make phone calls almost by thinking about what you're going to do."
