BOSSIER PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

Bossier Parish teens are mourning the loss of a Haughton High School student that was killed in a crash Monday after reportedly losing control of her van.

Louisiana State Patrol Troop G Investigators say the crash happened about 3 p.m. on Bellevue Road at Parker Road.

Police say 17-year-old Kaitlin "Katy" Smith was speeding in a 2001 Honda Odyssey when she lost control and hit a 2003 Dodge Ram driven by 43-year-old Eddie La Croix.

Smith and La Croix were wearing seatbelts during the crash but suffered fatal injuries. Troopers say that there were no other occupants in either vehicle.

The crash is still under investigation.

According to friends of the Smith family, Kaitlin was a band member at Haughton High School. This makes Smith the second Haughton High School student and band member to be killed in a car crash this school year.

Matthew Kirkhart was also a Haughton High School student and band member. Kirkhart was killed in September 2012 in crash just west of the Bossier-Webster Parish line on Hwy 164.

Haughton High School Principal Gene Couvillion released a statement saying: "She (Smith) was an 11th grader this year and an outstanding student. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family, friends and classmates. She will be truly missed."

Counselors and social workers will be at the school Tuesday morning to talk to students.

KSLA News 12 is working to learn more information about La Croix.
