GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - Police arrested two suspects accused of trying to steal lawnmowers early Monday morning.

The Gonzales Police Department said David Lewis, 32, and Jovan Murphy, 33, both of New Orleans, were taken into custody after officers responded to a burglar alarm at the Home Depot on Cajun Boulevard in Gonzales.

Investigators said the officers saw a U-Haul truck backed up to the enclosure at the rear of the building. They reported the truck was loaded with new riding lawnmowers worth about $6,000.

Police began searching the fenced-in area and found the two suspects inside.

They said Lewis and Murphy tried to get away by climbing the 18-foot fence. Murphy was caught immediately, but Lewis managed to run away.

Authorities contacted Hunt Correctional and its police dogs helped officers find Lewis in a wooded area at the intersection of I-10 and South Burnside Avenue (LA 44).

Detectives said they later learned the U-Haul is believed to have been stolen from New Orleans.

They reported all of the items were recovered and returned to Home Depot.

Lewis and Murphy were booked into the Ascension Parish Prison, but a list of charges has not been released.

They are both awaiting bond.
